BUSH'S BOOZE CRISIS
By JENNIFER LUCE and DON GENTILE
Faced with the biggest crisis of his political life, President Bush has hit the bottle again, The National Enquirer can reveal.
Bush, who said he quit drinking the morning after his 40th birthday, has started boozing amid the Katrina catastrophe.
Family sources have told how the 59-year-old president was caught by First Lady Laura downing a shot of booze at their family ranch in Crawford, Texas, when he learned of the hurricane disaster.
His worried wife yelled at him: "Stop, George."

Re: Nat. Enquirer picking on the preznit?
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 4:51 PMI tend to call "shenanigans" to anything I read about in the NE. But I have to say, I buy this. Falling off the wagon wouldn't even be the dumbest thing he's done in the last week... -

National Enquirer and facts
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 5:39 PMSome years ago, during the OJ trial, the National Enquirer did a story on Marsha Clark. More specifically, they did a story on Gaby Horowitz, her ex-husband, and the man who paid her way through law school. He was a notorious backgammon cheater from the 70s, and had other colorful events in his past incluing being shot in the head accidentally under strange circumstances.
I wasn't there for the 70s stuff, but I know many people who were. They all say that the National Enquirer reporting was both factually correct and spot-on about his character.

Re: Nat. Enquirer picking on the preznit?
Thu, September 22, 2005 - 10:46 PMsome psychologist wrote about georgie's drinking problem when he got that black eye from that pretzel, remember? (apparently the pretzel broke his little fall off the wagon THAT time.)
anyway, the article (or was it a book?) was all about the way the 12-step thing works, and the role that religion plays in recovery, and how he'd never see reality with such a tightly-knit support system like he's got, too insular, and blah, blah, blah.
it's morbidly fascinating to see all that theory in play now, grinding out like some sort of clockwork rat. -

Re: Nat. Enquirer picking on the preznit?
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 12:19 AMI could be mistaken, but wasn't it the NE that broke the Rush Limbaugh/oxycontin story? Maybe once in a while they accidentally get something right - like a million typing monkeys pounding out Hamlet if we wait long enough.

Re: Nat. Enquirer picking on the preznit?
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 12:55 AMI've always wondered what it would be like to work at an all-out tabloid.
Do they pretend that they're doing real journalism? Or do they sit around wondering whether an alien baby or a three-headed dog would be a better cover story this week? "It's been three months since we had a UFO abduction. I think we need to go with that." -

Re: Nat. Enquirer picking on the preznit?
Fri, September 23, 2005 - 1:12 AMSometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
And my bet is, when that is the case, the NE prints the truth... ;-) -

Re: Nat. Enquirer picking on the preznit?
Sat, September 24, 2005 - 9:39 PMFrom what I understand, the NE pays its sources quite well -- and also keeps records in case they're sued. Also, I read that they imported a gaggle of high-powered Fleet Streeters who are vets of the British tabloid system. Over there, they've got some hardcore libel laws, so you know they don't take too many chances.
As Bill Maher said last night, just look at the evidence:
Bush is always late, runs up tabs he can't pay and gets in fights with people who weren't bothering him. -
